On The 9th Day of Blogmas: The LUSH Tag

Blogmas

To start, I am not a Lushie – there are two times each year that I shop at LUSH, Christmas & when I run out of Karma Kream. I am supremely annoyed that my beloved Karma Kream is being discontinued, again, when I know that it will just be brought back eventually. Anyway, I have enough for now but have yet to order any Christmas items which I was ordering today when I came upon this fun little tag & figured I would give it a whirl.

Sweet Husky

A former co-worker of mine was obsessed with LUSH & we would always stop in there when we went to the Mall of America which, used to be a lot more often than I do now. Over the years, I started to find products that I really enjoyed & find that they have the perfect gifts for just about anyone.

Sweet Husky

I don’t go to the physical stores any longer, I think they are too small & chaotic. These days, I usually place an order 1-2 times a year & mostly for Christmas goodies & gifts. I think the stores are very lovely to look at but why are they so small?!

Sweet Husky

Karma Kream! It is the perfect mix of sweet & musky plus it is a really great moisturizer for dry skin. I hope that they do bring it back at some point, I feel that this will be the second time that this product has been ‘discontinued.’

Sweet Husky

Karm & Goddess are my go to soaps but I don’t use them everyday, they are more of a treat. Unfortunately, essential oils wreak havoc on my skin if I use them continually. Karm is a bar of patchouli goodness & Goddess is a jasmine dream. Both scents are beautiful in all of the different formats.

Sweet Husky

I love baths, here’s the deal, the diverter on my faucet recently stopped working though so I have been filling the bath by running the shower. You know what sound I hate? Shower water spraying standing water. Drives me nuts. Now, how long do I let it ride without being fixed before I take that puppy off myself? Probably until my LUSH box gets here. I love all bath bombs from LUSH – Butterball & Shoot for the Stars are probably in my top though. Goddess is again, really fabulous & it makes the bathroom smell heavenly for hours. I think there has only been one bath bomb that I did not enjoy & it was because it made my skin so itchy.

Sweet Husky

Happy Hippy, not contest – it’s a light, fruity scent that is very pleasant at any time of year. Rose Jam is a winter time favorite, a lot sweeter than what I typically go for but still enjoyable. I have not used their jelly products, I’m not sure how they would last & if they would be messy.

Sweet Husky

I have used some of their skincare but honestly, was not impressed for the price. I feel as though LUSH capitalizes on the green beauty, clean beauty, etc. trend & I just don’t think some of the products were very effective. Their shampoo bars though are awesome – I have dry hair so my favorites are both softening bars. I have Honey I Washed My Hair and Jason & The Argan Oil on rotation in my shower. I’ve tried a couple of their conditioner bars but stick to Candy Rain for my dry hair.

Sweet Husky

The Full of Grace solid serum, I loved the concept & thought it sounded like it would be good for my skin but holy break outs. Also, it didn’t melt on contact like other pressed serums I have used do. It really took some tugging & pulling to get it onto my face which isn’t something I want to be putting my skin through on the regular.

Are you a LUSH fan, are all of the stores so small? I’m curious to know what they look like in other regions. I live in close proximity to 4 different locations & they are roughly the size of a modest master bedroom. Let me know what your favorite products are – thanks for stopping by 🀍

On The 6th Day of Blogmas: My Favorite Vlogmas

Blogmas

Confession, I’m a vlog junkie. I love watching people just living their lives. Oh, you’re detailing your car for two hours? Fascinating. Vloggers bring me back to a more wholesome time on YouTube when it was normal people broadcasting themselves. Now YouTube seems so hyper-stylized & plagued with drama. Many of my favorite vloggers have stopped vlogging or left the platform altogether. For those who still post YouTube content, few continue to post Vlogmas which is just a bummer. Luckily for me, my favorite content creators who still post Vlogmas definitely do it the best!

Jessica Braun & Family – I’ve been watching Jessica for a long time & just adore her little family. They live in Indiana & their content is delightfully Midwestern. She posts a little bit of everything; lifestyle, grocery hauls, recipes, beauty, travel & it’s all genuinely relatable. She & her husband (Tyler) are so goofy & wholesome. I also appreciate how they include their daughter in their vlogs without over sharing. Kids on YouTube & family vlog channels mostly just weird me out. The Braun family vlogmas highlight decorating, cooking, baking & loads of other wholesome content.

Fleur De Force & Family – Fleur is another one I’ve been watching for a very long & she is the coolest. Her style, her taste in home decor – she’s a total class act. Her family lives in the English countryside in what appears to be an old manor house with at least 100 rooms. I’m sure it’s not that big but whenever she posts in a new room I’m like – what room is this?! Her house is to die for, check out her kitchen renovation 🀩 Fleur & her husband, Mike have the cutest daughter named River. Again, while she is included, it’s not seemingly invasive. Also, her name is River – just the coolest. Their vlogmas are a bit more posh, stunning trees, handmade gift wrapping, gin & tonics – I love it all. Her lockdown vlogs have been really delightful as well.

It’s been fun watching these Youtubers grow up & evolve over the years – I hope that they keep posting & sharing glimpses of their lives for a very long time. Do you have any vlogger recommendations, let me know & thanks for reading ❄

On The 5th Day of Blogmas: Dreaming of a White Christmas β„

Blogmas

December 5th, still no snow. Growing increasingly disappointed in 2020, if that’s even imaginable. I cannot believe that we still don’t have any snow on the ground! We had 2-3 inches right before Halloween & it seemed that we were well on our way into winter. Then November hit with a series of unseasonably warm weeks, not days, weeks. Seemingly, there is no end in sight & very little precipitation in the forecast. I just knew that 2020 would find a way to ruin Christmas. I’m being a tad dramatic, perhaps.

For me, snow is an integral part of the holiday season. I could never live in a climate where snow is rare or nonexistent. I love the smell of snow, the reflection of it on a dark night, the way it sparkles against lights. The best Christmas day memories are those of sledding or ice skating after the indoor festivities had commenced. Many of these idealic days were punctuated with beautiful snow showers. I can’t remember any brown Christmases & yet that seems to be the norm now. This makes me a bit sad, I can honestly say that I’ve witnessed climate change during my lifetime. I mean, it doesn’t just cease to snow in a cold climate for simply no good reason.

The lack of cold weather & snow doesn’t just put a damper on my holiday spirit – I love cold weather sports. Snowshoeing, cross country skiing, snowboarding & ice skating are all dependent on good winter conditions & it’s not even cold enough for a coat right now.

I will be tremendously disappointed if it doesn’t snow by Christmas, I didn’t think that this year could be more of a let down & here we are 😐 Do you have any snow in your neck of the woods? Let me know so I can move there πŸ˜‚

On the 4th Day of Blogmas: Candle Day

Blogmas

…palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy…When I heard that Bath & Body Works was extending their Candle Day event & including an online shopping day – I didn’t pay it much mind. I never make it into the store for the big event anyway because I cannot handle crowds like that under any circumstances let alone during a pandemic. Usually, I just wait until the candles are $14.50 & I have a 20% coupon which brings the candles down to almost the same price as the candle day deal then I go to the store for a leisurely shopping experience. However, on further inspection of said coupon, this year it said that it cannot be combined with other offers or sales. What?! I get it, retailers are definitely struggling & probably less inclined to offer deals on deals on deals. So, here I am, 5 AM (I always get up at 5, I wasn’t doing it for Candle Day), going back & forth on whether or not I was going to give in & purchase some candles online. But, Stella – you just received a box of broken glass that is still sitting in your closet & your online ordering experiences have been less than 10/10.

Here’s the thing, I have a home fragrance obsession & I still needed to replace the candles that I was going to give as gifts because they are going to be the center item in these baskets I’m putting together. Now, I had considered swapping them for a bottle of wine but a couple of friends have stopped drinking during the pandemic & everyone can enjoy a candle. I decided that I was going to replace the gift candles & treat myself to one seasonal scent. Seems reasonable, right? Here’s what actually happened.

To start why is online shopping so difficult? It’s supposed to be easy, it never is unless your are shopping on Amazon which sucks because that’s why people shop so much on Amazon – myself included. I’ve never had payment issues, had an item be in stock when I check out & then received an email saying that the item was actually not in stock, they process refunds incredibly fast, replace missing items – just to name a few reasons that keep me coming back to Amazon. Obviously, being a brick & mortar retailer who also has e-commerce is different than only ever existing as an online retailer. Their logistics capabilities probably blow most other retailers out of the water. I have never heard of Amazon crashing even though they sell an average of 4,000 items per minute. Bath & Body Works goes live with Candle Day & the site almost immediately crashes. Why? Why does Amazon seemingly have access to far & away more bandwidth than any other online retailer?! It’s all the same internet, I don’t get it. So, I just knew that after 5 minutes of the website spinning & then getting the Uh-Oh screen that this was going to be a ride.

I have zero patience for online shopping, I would much rather go to a store in person & stand in line if need be. These retailers want me to wait in an online queue in the world of ones & zeros?! I don’t think so. Also, I am not very online shopping savvy – I’ve heard of shoppers using multiple computers or devices to navigate websites. I literally cannot be bothered. I decided to just leave the site & come back, when I came back it took awhile to load but it eventually did. There were a couple of scents that I wanted that were already sold out, no big deal because I was only getting one for me anyway. I’m adding to bag but had to click multiple times to actually get items to the bag, everything seemed fine otherwise, I’m so close to checking out that I can taste it. I choose PayPal because I think that’s the most secure way to check out online. The website timed out when it was sending me over to PayPal. I back up, my bag is empty, I refill it, select PayPal & this time it works. Huzzah! Back to the B&BW website, the submit order button is greyed out so I refresh the page. It’s clickable, the end is near. Processing, processing, confirmation from PayPal…processing, processing, another confirmation from PayPal….& then another. In the end, I ended up with three orders with multiples of items that I thought I was only selecting 1 each of but I’m guessing that I was adding to bag but the bag wasn’t updating…? Apparently, I have ordered almost 40 candles. I contacted B&BW immediately to let them know that they were all duplicate orders, there is no reason for them to ship 2 additional orders to me when I know they are swamped & nobody needs that many candles!! I can’t believe that the orders weren’t immediately flagged.

I’m stressed, my heart hurts a little – like a tightness in my chest. I think I should lay down. Do people actually enjoy online shopping?! How is this enjoyable, shopping stresses me out anyway but there is something so intangible about online shopping that really makes me anxious. I don’t feel like I have actually successfully purchased something until it’s physically in my hands. My hope is that they see that there are multiple duplicate orders but that still doesn’t remedy the fact that I was obviously clicking around too much & adding more than one item to my bag. Everything is mostly sold out now so I guess I’m glad that I shopped early…?

I’m tired, are you an online shopper? I know that you cannot beat the convenience but gosh, it seems like such an ordeal more often than not. I would probably have been better off just hitting the store tomorrow but here we are. If the candles arrive busted, that’s it for me & online shopping.

On The 3rd Day of Blogmas: Black Friday Fail

Blogmas

You guys, I think the universe is sending me a sign that I should be saving my shekels instead of spending them on more beauty stuff that I really don’t need. Most of my Black Friday budget was spent at ULTA because they were having some great deals. I swear, they make way more money off me than they pay me πŸ˜› Well, my order of 16 or so items arrived yesterday & 6 of those items were candles that I was giving as gifts with some other bits for my gal pals. The UPS delivery man who is such a nice guy knocked on my door & handed me the box, he said it sounded broken & boy, he was right. First of all, whoever packed the box should have picked a bigger one at the very least. All of the items were crammed to the brim of the box without a single piece of packing material. All 6 candles were on top, completely shattered. The makeup was underneath the candles & I am guessing just the sheer weight of the candles crushed them because it was a mess. One bottle of shampoo had a big slash in it & the product had completely filled the bottom of the box. I stopped examining the items because it started to get hairy digging through glass laced shampoo. The outside of the box was in perfect condition & I don’t think it was a carrier issue, the warehouse just did a terrible job of packing the box. I’m not making a fuss (aside from this long-winded rant), first because I am an employee & second because the distribution centers are probably overworked & understaffed. I did request a refund because I cannot use a single thing in that box & am pretty disappointed but like I said, taking it as a sign. Also, I have no idea what do with with this box of broken glass?! I already told customer service that I am not sending it back through the mail! Eventually, the shampoo will make the box soggy enough that it could break open & really hurt someone. I don’t want to return it at my store because then we’ll just have a box of broken glass in the damages pile. Update – customer service told me that I could just throw the products away & a refund would be issued πŸ™‚ I still think that I will go through it & separate everything as much as possible, what a mess.

Looking at this photo, the cotton rounds did survive!

The only other item that I purchased for myself was a handbag from Foley & Corrina which was on sale but not that great of sale, I really just needed a small bag that I could carry essential items in for work. Back when the CDC was saying that COVID could live on surfaces for like 16 hours, I started using a fanny pack when I went out that I would wash constantly. Well, now that I am back at the office, my neon green fanny pack is less than chic & a little faded from all that washing. I’m not ready to go back to my big bags because I still feel like I need to wipe them down & I don’t need to be carrying one since they double as my gym bag. I wanted a small, synthetic bag that still looked nice but would be easy to clean & hold what I needed it to. This little bag checks all of those boxes & it’s pretty cute, the gold accents look like a smiley face πŸ™‚

I’m a mid-sized gal, certainly not thin so I tend to avoid small bags because they make me feel bigger but I really cannot be bothered to care at the moment. The strap on this bag is long enough to make the perfect cross body, I can wear it over my coats too & it doesn’t look oddly small. It’s a simple bag with enough little details to make it fun.

I honestly don’t know a lot about this brand or how well this bag will wear. Most of my other bags are leather or vegan leather, this one is simply described as synthetic so I guess we’ll see. It has a nice weight to it though & very nice lining. There is a credit card pocket on the outside & one zip pocket on the inside. It holds everything that I need it to, I’ve already used disinfectant wipes on it a couple of times with no issues.

Did you snag any deals this year – let me know what you had your eye on! I really, really wanted one of those robotic vacuum things but couldn’t commit & I don’t mind vacuuming anyway, I think my cats & neighbors would prefer that I purchase one since I vacuum a lot but maybe I will get one for Christmas πŸ˜€ I hope that you are happy, healthy & just doing the best you can πŸ–€

On the 1st Day of Blogmas: A Christmas Tag

Blogmas

Or Holiday Tag – whatever you celebrate! It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Welcome to Blogmas, I hope that you are as excited as I am for this holiday season. I’m not really a huge Christmas person, like the actual day with the gifting & the feasting but I appreciate the feeling of this particular season. Everything seems a little brighter, a little more hopeful & people a little more kind. The festive season has this ability to bring out the best in humanity & the world is better for it – when people say that they wish it was Christmas all year round, I imagine that it is this feeling they are referring to. What can one expect from my Blogmas posts? A bit of everything really, some recipes, a lot of dΓ©cor/lifestyle posts, tags & such. I do not post gift guides, I’m not great at recommending gifts to others although I pride myself on giving really good gifts but only because I’m struck with a thought randomly, usually last minute. Today’s post is a collection of tag questions that I have rounded up. I was not tagged to do this, I am a bit of a tag cheater – if I see one that I like, then I do it. If you are reading this & enjoying it, consider yourself tagged!

Mr. Kebab Demo Regular

Just one?! If I had to choose my absolute favorite holiday film, it would be National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation because it portrays a real, gritty, yet hilarious set of circumstances that can happen when your modern family gets together. With all of the personalities & quirks, expectations – I like that it is relatable to some of my childhood Christmas memories. Maybe everything wasn’t perfect but we still had a good time, we never kidnapped anyone but I have some stories about tree fires πŸ˜€ They are humorous now but tragic in the moment, nobody was ever hurt either – I know that Christmas tree fires are no joke.

Mr. Kebab Demo Regular

There are strong opinions on this, I don’t have any. I had a roommate who would play Christmas music when she was stressed out & have enjoyed carols in the dead of summer on occasion. It was somewhat surprising to hear stores playing Christmas tunes so early this year but I didn’t necessarily mind it. I would say, any time that you feel in the mood is acceptable.

Mr. Kebab Demo Regular

Since living on my own, it really just depends on what I am doing. If I am visiting family then probably the day of but as a kid it was always stockings on the eve then we stayed up to attend midnight mass then opened gifts on Christmas Day. Nowadays, gift exchanges typically occur on random days with friends – I’m flexible πŸ˜€

Mr. Kebab Demo Regular

I loved Christmas as a kid, we had this loft style living area where we would put the tree & I recall the glow of those big, glass bulbs on a pitch black night. Instead of a tree skirt, my mom would roll out this big, red braided rug to set the tree on. We were the only house for literally miles on a road to nowhere but my dad would spend an entire day wrapping our big fence with lights. I don’t know how many strands it was but it took forever & I thought it was well worth the effort but mostly because I was usually just chilling in the snow while he did it. I guess I don’t have one big memory but lots of little things that I remember fondly.

Mr. Kebab Demo Regular

Fresh cut pine trees! I can’t have a real tree where I live & have not been able to for some years but I love a good pine scented candle. I can’t wait until I move into a house where I can have a real tree – maybe not every year but occasionally.

Mr. Kebab Demo Regular

Not really, I like to take one weekend day to bake cookies & watch James Bond films. I’m unsure of the rules around home baked goods this year but I figure if I put them into their own little bags then they are OK to share? I figure someone will eat them if they are sitting out?! I try to purchase a new ornament each year, I don’t like to be too matchy with my tree ornaments & have found this to be a good way to add variety.

Mr. Kebab Demo Regular

Currently nothing! I have owned this particular tree for going on 6 years now & still have not found a tree topper that I like. I just don’t know what I am looking for but also have not seen anything that I feel really fits it. I have a smaller tree that I sometimes put in my room that I have a topper for but it’s a much smaller tree & was much easier to find something for. I don’t know what I am looking for but hopefully I find it before the lights on this one go out & I have to find a whole new one πŸ™‚

Mr. Kebab Demo Regular

Pie! I’m a big fan of pie, if dinner/lunch involves particularly good pies – I will skip most of the other foods so I can have more pie. I don’t know if I’ve ever had a bad pie to be honest – I have made a few bad ones but I digress. Pecan is probably my favorite, or sweet potato…let me know what your favorite pie is, definitely always keen to try more!

Mr. Kebab Demo Regular

Otis Redding’s White Christmas & Stevie Wonder’s Christmas Means to Me. Aside from those, I prefer instrumental or classical music.

Mr. Kebab Demo Regular

Vaccines, can we all just get vaccines for gifts this year? I just want this pandemic to be in the past, I know that nothing will ever be the same but I want to start living in the future state. I’m just so tired, a huge weight will be lifted from the world when we are finally able to move forward. So Dear Santa, vaccines for all! What are you wishing for this year?

I hope that you enjoyed this tag to kick off Blogmas, let me know if you do this one as I would love to read your responses! I am certain that this will be a very different holiday season for many & I hope that we are all able to find joy in the season. There are lots of things that I am finding myself especially grateful for though I took them for granted in years prior. Thanks for stopping by, happy first day of Blogmas!!

Another Black Friday Come & Gone

Blogmas

But first, a comical story πŸ˜› ULTA has recently brought in a lot of amazing brands, Hourglass?! Are you kidding me?! I work a lot in display setting & it’s so much fun being able to set a fresh, new display packed with goodies. There’s something really satisfying about making testers, I love cleaning them too – it’s just one of those mindless, repetitive tasks that is very calming for some reason. This past weekend, we’re unloading truck & we received a ton of fur products which sounded vaguely familiar. We’re looking at the products trying to figure out what they are when one of the gals blurts out, Oh, it’s bush oil. Dead. Then for some reason, of all the things, that made me recall Emma Watson raving about Fur Oil in an article that I had read some time ago. We’re all losing it at this point & it was just hysterically absurd that any of us would care about Emma Watson’s product recommendations for anything let alone bush oil. We didn’t receive a full display so thank goodness we couldn’t get anything onto the floor because I would not have been able to hold it together if someone had purchased said oil. Also, I think you can use the oil anywhere if you’re curious πŸ˜›

I had last week off as I mentioned but ended up working almost the entire week at ULTA because we had (have) so many out with COVID. Many of them were able to come back just in time for Black Friday so – yay but also, I am wondering how many of us picked it up over the weekend. In all honesty, I was shocked at how many people were out shopping at the stores around us & at our store. For some reason I thought that retailers running the same deal a week ahead of time paired with loads of online only deals would equal smaller crowds on Friday/Saturday. Clearly, my math skills were no match for some people’s complete lack of common sense. It was a hot, sweaty, busy day & now thankfully, it’s done so everyone can actually stay home like they were told to. I have to say that most people were actually quite pleasant & it was just more so overwhelming to see crowds that we haven’t been seeing for almost a year now. Working the holidays in retail is so much fun (usually) & it felt a little bit like a normal day.

It’s funny, I never recall my parents mentioning anything about Black Friday growing up, maybe I just wasn’t paying attention but I never knew when they went gift shopping. My siblings would have been old enough for Cabbage Patch kids during that whole mania but I don’t know what hot gifts there are this year. Let me know what you were jonesing for.

I did some Black Friday shopping, all online and I plan to share some of the items for a Blogmas post. Unfortunately, my cellphone decided to shit out & I had to splurge on a new one which I was not planning for at all as my current phone was in perfect working order only a week ago. Honestly, if I didn’t need a smartphone for work then I would be perfectly content with an old flip phone. Aside from something that I wasn’t excited to purchase in the least, I did get myself some beauty bits πŸ™‚ Stay tuned if that’s your thing.

That being said, tomorrow kicks off the first day of Blogmas & I am tremendously excited to share some festive content. If you are also participating in Blogmas, please let me know so that I can be sure to check out your posts!! Did you go any Black Friday shopping? I’m curious to know what others experienced on this grandest of all shopping days πŸ˜› Thanks for stopping by, stay healthy out there!

Monday Already

Life & Style

In all honesty, I completely forgot that today was Monday as I have the week off. No, I am not doing anything or traveling anywhere – just using up vacation time before I lose it. We had a COVID outbreak at my part-time job & I went in for a little bit to help out there. Thankfully, I work there so infrequently that I was not exposed but we currently have 6 associates out 😬 I suspected that this would be the week that retail workers would be hit hard. The Starbucks near my work is closed until further notice because they also had a major outbreak.

I got all of my Christmas shopping done this weekend, mostly because I think retail will be shut down post Black Friday. I could be wrong but didn’t want to find out either. Probably the highlight of my annual shopping trip is meeting up with my best friend & spending the day gift hunting. Obviously we could not do that this year but we did Skype while we wrapped gifts. Each year we do a Toys for Tots haul & just go nuts, it’s literally the most fun thing ever. We scour all of the toy gift guides & plan our attack. This year, I was fascinated by the LOL Surprise Dolls & knew I was snagging some of those. I think they’re pretty mature but they’re so popular that parents must be purchasing them? Anyway, I was super excited about Pop BB – listen, their names are completely asinine but she’s so cute. I had told my friend that I loved her because she looked like Madonna πŸ˜‚ So, we’re showing each other our Tots haul & he also got Pop BB. I was like, but I got Pop BB then he said he got one so I could keep mine πŸ˜‚ It was the nicest yet silliest thing anyone has done for me. I felt like a kid on Christmas opening that box.

Tell me she’s not the cutest.

I’m glad that my shopping is done, being out this weekend was one of the few times that I have felt truly anxious about getting sick. I generally feel confident in the restrictions & guidelines that are in place but there were so many people out that it made me nervous. I still have a small grocery run to do but plan on heading out very early to avoid the crowds.

It was a great weekend then I left this morning to discover that someone had stolen my holiday doormat which seems pretty fitting for a Monday πŸ˜‚ I don’t understand people sometimes. What did you do this weekend? I hope that you are happy, healthy & just doing the best you can 🀍

Pets Are Forever…✨

Life

Or at least a very long time. Recently I have noticed an abundance of social media posts from friends, families, complete strangers that they finally gave in & got a family dog or other pet. Many of these posts allude to families being at home more often & finally having the time to invest in a pet. This gives me pause, for a couple of reasons – while I think it’s great to see so many pets being adopted, when things go back to normal will these families still have time for their pets or will they become neglected and/or rehomed? Pets can fill a void, I would be very lonely without my cats but animals are sentient beings & their singular existence is not to entertain, feed or otherwise serve human beings. I think that many people are feeling a variety of holes right now that a pet could probably fill but pets are a commitment, not a temporary void filler.

Pluto, ripping up my blanket

Growing up a farm kid, we often took in a lot of rabbits after Easter because families would purchase them as gifts for the holiday & then didn’t feel the need to keep them. It’s baffling that grown adults who thought they were intelligent enough to have kids would bestow a living creature on their child as a gift only to dispose of it. I always wondered how they explained the sudden absence of the rabbits to their kids? Oh, it’s OK to temporarily use another living thing for your entertainment & enjoyment…?

Venus is a bit fat, she is on special food πŸ™‚
Neptune was a runt, she has an irregularly small stomach & kidneys. She is prone to stomach infections & eats everything she finds.

I have a softer spot in my heart for animals than I do most people. Why? Animals didn’t ask to be here. You could argue that people don’t ask to be born either but that’s a different discussion. Animals are at the mercy of their owners & unfortunately, human cruelty & ignorance has no bounds. See dog fighting, cock fighting, bull fighting…trophy hunting to the detriment of entire species. Animals trust us to protect them & we continually fail. We dictate what species are invasive, what species are subject to population control (or removal as the DNR calls it) while we allow our own species to propagate unfettered. The least that we can do for animals is to treat them with some compassion & kindness.

Not sure what I walked in on, probably Pluto harassing Neptune
Looking for trouble.

This is just a reminder that pets are a long-term commitment & a lot of work. I once read a snarky, mommy martyr post that said something like; Pets aren’t kids, I wish I could just leave my kid alone with a bowl of milk. Or something as ridiculously self-aggrandizing & ignorant. Are pets kids? No. Does someone treating their pet like a kid detract from someone’s motherhood? Also, no. Is social media a cesspool? Yes. My point is, pets can be a lot of work. They can have health issues, your home will require some pet-proofing, they need regular vet visits, teeth cleanings, food, sometimes prescription food, water, a clean environment & plenty of attention. If I just left my cats alone with a bowl of milk, we’d have some serious issues. I have one cat that eats anything it finds on the floor, I have to vacuum my apartment almost everyday. I’ve had to baby proof all of my cabinets to keep them from getting hurt or stuck – there is no end to amount of mischief they can get into but I appreciate their presence in my life. If you get a dog, it probably needs to be allowed into the house when it is cold – some breeds can survive outside but a family pet should be allowed in the house. I actually know a family that has a dog that is never allowed inside because it gets hair on the couch. Yes, dogs have fur that sheds…? I also know a family of sled dogs who live outside year round, we had sheep dogs growing up that rarely came into the house. I understand the difference between a pet & work or service animal. A labrador living in the suburbs probably does not fall into the work category. Anyway…

She is also only about the size of a 1-year old cat even though she is seven.

If you or someone you know is thinking of getting a pet as a result of this new pandemic life, just remember that this could be temporary & a pet will still be here when the pandemic is done. I know that is hard to believe but one day, things could be very normal & if that pet didn’t fit into that formerly normal life then chances are they just won’t fit in your life. Also, be sure to research the needs & best environment for your new companion. Is your family a good fit? Do you have enough space? Eventually they will pass away too which can be tremendously traumatic. My grandparents had a no pet rule after losing a family dog when my dad was a kid, I’ve never asked for the full story there but it obviously had a lasting impact.

I love to see so many adoptions happening, I hope that all of these people are in it for the right reasons & the long run & lots of happy homes are made πŸ–€

Entertainment

I’m an admitted home body, I love being at home but I also liked having the option of not being at home when I wanted. With what is gearing up to be a long, long winter ahead & having even more quiet time at home, I have definitely been consuming more than my fair share of media. Books, music, television, movies – sometimes I have the radio on while I am reading a book – madness, I tell you. Really anything that will distract me from shopping online, eating or watching the news πŸ˜›

Wonderful Jungle Free Regular

I missed out on this classic during my youth but have made up for these past few weeks. It’s just fun, wholesome, 90’s entertainment. Sarah Michelle Gellar was such a teen queen & David Boreanaz is still my ultimate dream boat. I’m a big fan of Agent Booth in Bones & didn’t realize he played such a major role in Buffy. I don’t get why the vampires are all so hideous but I have enjoyed every episode so far. I think I might check out Charmed next as I never watched that one before either.

Wonderful Jungle Free Regular

I am a repeat offender of watching comfort shows instead of checking out new ones, I am trying to break this habit. The Office takes me back to college & my dorm mates hunkering down to watch new episodes when we had spare time. Even though I’ve watched so many of the episodes dozens of times, they still crack me up. I think that my favorites are the Christmas episodes but I will elaborate more on that during Blogmas πŸ˜›

Wonderful Jungle Free Regular

This show has been surprisingly tough for me to get into even though I have a keen interest in the royal family. Not the newest generation, my interest stops with Diana but Queen Elizabeth & Princess Margaret are some of my favorite royals to read about. I felt inclined to dive back into the show when Gillian Anderson was announced as Margaret Thatcher – I cannot wait to get to the most recent season.

Wonderful Jungle Free Regular

New folk, old folk, all the folk. I’ve been enjoying The Decemberists, Simon & Garfunkel, Joan Baez, The Traveling Wilburys, John Denver – you name it, I’ve been rocking out to it. The Mariner’s Revenge Song has been my favorite to drive around & scream sing too. Also, I can’t carry a tune so I mostly scream sing everything πŸ˜€ The live version of My Back Pages sung by most of the members of the Traveling Wilburys has also been a repeat. I never understood the chorus but it makes a lot more sense to me in my adulthood.

Wonderful Jungle Free Regular

This series is so good! I had the first book on a recent To Be Read & am so glad that I did. It’s not as good as the world of Harry Potter but it is still a very fun & if you have any interest in the darker, youth fantasy genre I would recommend checking it out. I have been listening to the series on Audible & I think the narrator is fantastic all around but would definitely pick up a hard copy too. The storyline of cursed children is dark but the main character is saved from her demise & that’s where the adventure begins.

I have a lot of time on my hands so if you have any recommendations, let me know! I’m not looking for anyting super heavy right now but open to most anything else 🀍
