New Year, New…blah, blah, blah…

Life

New Year’s has never been my holiday, growing up with my mother, we were always expecting the world to end. To me, the year already starts off fantastic simply because the world didn’t end. When I started living on my own I planned on sleeping through the stroke of midnight so then I would at least miss the Apocalypse – or whatever the fuck the religious zealots always say is going to happen. Is it the Rapture? Don’t we want that? I always wondered how the end of the world worked with time zones. Is it when the first continent hits midnight? Does Death just pick at random? Wouldn’t it be a laugh if the world actually ends at like 1:42 AM or other seemingly insignificant, unassuming time? Exactly where will he be riding from, are there numerous entities? How can the entire world end all at once? Won’t some countries hear of the arrival of the end of the world and be able to prepare? Always things that I wondered as a child, it was a relief watching the NYE celebration in New York because I could relax knowing they were 3 hours ahead of us and hadn’t been smote so we were probably in the clear. It’s nuts right? Thanks, Christianity. Let’s not even get into the fact that time is a man made construct and only exists because we all adhere to it and say it does. So, like I said, not big into New’s Year 😀 I don’t make resolutions, if you want to make a change then do it whenever you feel like it! Also, the world could be ending so why wait for New Year’s?! I appreciate the concept of leaving things in the past year and have some things that can stay in 2019.

I’m sure that most people can relate to this one, I will jump on Instagram to see what’s happening and spend hours on the explore page absorbing shit that isn’t enriching my life. I definitely want to be choosier with how I spend my time and stay up to date on current events without the unnecessary bullshit.

Smol Kitty Boi

I have been working since I was 16, I’m sick of it and I am sick of working all of the time. I was thinking just the other day that I wouldn’t be up at 5 AM if I didn’t need to be at work, my work day starts 3 hours before I’m even there. I wouldn’t use as much gas, I wouldn’t have to waste money on work specific clothes. And no, I am not compensated for these things with my salary – my salary is for what I do when I actually get to work. How is this not talked about more?

Smol Kitty Boi

Not much to say here, I don’t like being around a lot of people.

Smol Kitty Boi

They know who they are 😛

Smol Kitty Boi

I have been treating myself all over the place, this is the year that I hope to purchase a house and should be more conservative. We won’t talk about the David’s Tea order that I treated myself to for my birthday 😀

Do you make resolutions or set goals for the new year? Let me know if you did anything fun for the holiday! Oh, and Happy New Year 🙂

Blogmas Day 25: So This is Christmas

Blogmas - 2019

It’s raining & foggy in Minnesota, on Christmas. Most of my merry making happened yesterday since that’s how we did things growing up. Christmas day was spent at Mass & eating dinner. I also spent a large portion of the day cleaning. I tried relaxing in the bath but then noticed that the tubs needed cleaning, then I decided to go through my bathroom cupboards and throw out at stuff I wasn’t using. This led to cleaning the kitchen cupboards out and then the oven 😂 Then I watched Die Hard and had some pie. I just have a few items to take care of tomorrow before my vacation. I was supposed to post my December beauty favorites today but do you ever start something that ends up taking way longer than anticipated? That was like everything I did today. I will post them tomorrow and hopefully the sun will come out for photos. Anyway, I’ll just wish you & yours a Happy Christmas. What did you get up to today? If you don’t celebrate Christmas, what do you do on the extra days off? I’ve always wondered this, to a lot of folks this was just another Wednesday. What’s your Christmas wish? Mine is for greater understanding & empathy for others this year.

I think I’m going to get in one more viewing of The Grinch & enjoy some tea ☺️

Blogmas Day 23: Merry Christmas Eve, Eve

Blogmas - 2019

I can’t lie, I’m kinda ready to be done with Blogmas 😂 It’s fun but hard to come up with content that’s unique. Although, I love reading all of the festive posts and will be a little sad going back to business as usual. Tonight’s post will just be a bit of a catch up ☺️ I’m enjoying some hot cocoa and listening to some Christmas tunes, I feel very festive but wish it was snowing.

Today was my last day of work until January 6 and I couldn’t be more thrilled. It’s been a long year, I’m ready to not be at work for awhile. Two blissful weeks of sleeping, snowboarding, snowshoeing and sleeping.

I almost finished wrapping all of my gifts, I’m loving the new wrapping paper and how sparkly it is. I need one of those bins for storing paper though because my cats like to futz around in the rolls. I plan to hit Target bright and early to score some more string and will look for one then. I’m loving the rustic look of the string against the glitzy prints.

I received an Echo Dot as an early Christmas present and it’s the coolest thing! It’s the perfect size for my bedroom and I’m already thinking about one for the living room. I don’t own a television and my apartment can be too quiet at times, I can play just about anything on the Dot and it’s awesome.

I went to confession, it was as boring and sad as I thought it would be 😂 I’m all set for Christmas Mass though which is the only reason I went, that and the damn sign. Confession does have this weird ability to make you feel shiny and new, it’s hard to explain but glad I got it done.

That’s about it in my neck of the woods, a quiet evening before the hustle and bustle of Christmas celebrations commence. I hope you’re having a Merry Christmas Eve, Eve ☺️

Blogmas Day 20: Christmas PJ’s

Blogmas - 2019

So, I threw my back out the other day which has just made my week so awesome. How I did this exactly remains a mystery to me but here we are. I went to the chiropractor today and it is feeling better already but I was feeling especially sorry for myself and purchased some Christmas pajamas (among a whole other bunch of bullshit I didn’t really need at Target).

Christmas PJ’s are one of the few traditions I recall from my childhood that I actually enjoyed. My grandmother would send all of us matching sets to open on Christmas Eve and then we would wear them on Christmas morning. It’s just one of those simple things that makes the holiday a little more memorable. It’s also a super easy tradition to keep alive, it never feels dated and cozy pajamas make a great gift. Target had loads of holiday patterns, I chose these soft and stretchy red striped set. They’re stinking adorable and just what I was looking for.

Let me know what traditions have stuck with you over the years, thanks for reading!

Blogmas Day 19: Christmas Traditions I Can Live Without

Blogmas - 2019

I post something along these lines each year and most of it is hyperbole, I know and love that the holidays mean something different to everyone!

Forgiven Script

I know that it’s not raw eggs but I can’t with the texture of eggnog, the flavor or the smell. Why does it always taste and smell like there is booze in it when there isn’t? It’s milk, cream, sugar and whipped eggs, I can’t even. Also, booze doesn’t make it better.

Forgiven Script

I think that popcorn garland looks lovely but stringing it is a nightmare. I was terrible at stringing popcorn when I was a kid and repeatedly stabbed myself with the needle, I would never subject myself or others to this activity.

Forgiven Script

It’s creepy & everyone knows it, lets all collectively stop doing it.

Forgiven Script

I’m probably overthinking this but it’s odd to me that children everywhere are excited about their homes being invaded. I much prefer the kindly, charitable Saint Nicholas as opposed to the modern day, breaking & entering Santa. Who, by the way, doesn’t even eat the cookies that are left for him.

Forgiven Script

The milk and cookies thing – what a waste.

Forgiven Script

When I was a kid, it literally took my mom like 16 hours to cook a turkey. I have no idea why but it was Christmas Eve tradition that she would be up all night basting this stupid turkey. In my adulthood, I have found out that it does not take that long to cook a turkey – even a big one. I’ll never know why she cooked that thing so long.

Forgiven Script

Have you ever really listened to some of the lyrics to popular Christmas songs? Some are really bizarre, Winter Wonderland comes to mind. First of all, who is Parson Brown? Second, that whole are you married bit and the part time husband thing. Again, probably overthinking it but can someone write some new Christmas songs for the love of Parson Brown?!

Let me know what holiday traditions you could do without & thanks for stopping by!

Blogmas Day 15: Sunday Funday

Blogmas - 2019

I have a two week vacation coming up next week and I cannot wait. This time of year, while one of my favorites, is hard for an introvert. There’s just so much going on; potlucks, parties, work, shopping all on top of just regular existing and I’m exhausted. I’m in the middle of making 3-dozen chocolate spoons, I have to make a dish for work on Wednesday and a dessert for Friday and it will all be here and gone before you know it. I thought I’d just do a rambling update post for this evening.

Amilya Regular

I don’t have a metabolism that allows me to not work out everyday. It’s been so cold and icy that I decided to join a gym. So far so good, for $20 a month I can use all of the equipment and attend their classes. I’m liking it more than I thought I would, partly because I also picked up some cute new workout clothes 😝

Amilya Regular

Yup. I’m getting a new kitten, I have one senior cat and one younger cat who is a bit rambunctious. I’m thinking the younger cat could use a companion since my senior kitty is really mellow. I’ll be sure to post about him when he arrives in about 2 weeks.

Amilya Regular

I’ve been doing really well with not buying stuff I don’t need but I’ve been in a shopping mood. I think it’s partly due to the fact that I’ve been gift shopping and keep gifting myself 😉 Also though, my birthday is coming up and I’ll get back to better spending habits after that.

Amilya Regular

I totally spaced on sending any cards this year! On the one hand, I don’t mind because they’re just unnecessary waste but this is the first year since I was 18 that I haven’t sent any ☹️

Amilya Regular

I always claim that winter is my favorite season and then we have a winter like this one, we’ve already received 20 inches of snow and the first day of winter isn’t even until the 21st! Also, we’ve been having January temps and it’s been driving my MS crazy. Apparently, it makes me more sensitive to the cold and this year I’m really feeling it.

Amilya Regular

I don’t know where but I’ve had a hankering to see new places and meet new people lately. Unfortunately, all of the places that I’d like to live (in the middle of nowhere) don’t have an abundance of jobs. Living in a metro area has worn on me, I don’t like it but I do like my job. Who knows where I’ll end up but hopefully somewhere new soon.

That’s it for today, let me know what’s on you mind. Thanks for reading!

Blogmas Day 13: Thirteen Festive Facts

Blogmas - 2019

I am delighted that we get a Friday the 13th in December, I’m going to see a horror movie tonight and can’t think of a better way to spend a snowy winter’s eve. I think that there are probably elements of Christmas rooted in the supernatural but I couldn’t find enough facts related to this so just rounded up some kinda’ interesting ones instead!

  1. Evergreen was used during the winter solstice by the ancient Romans and Egyptians as a reminder of spring.
  2. Christmas was deemed a pagan holiday in the colonies from 1659-1681 and anyone caught celebrating it would be fined.
  3. 65% of Americans identify themselves as Christians but 90% celebrate Christmas.
  4. Jesus probably wasn’t born on December 25, the date was likely changed to align with the pagan festival of Saturnalia.
  5. The same man who dreamt up the Headless Horseman is also responsible for Santa’s sleigh.
  6. Eggnog was popularized in Jamestown in 1607.
  7. Christmas wreaths began as symbols of the crown of thorns worn by Jesus.
  8. Tinsel was once made with real silver and was outlawed for a period of time for containing real lead.
  9. Christmas is not actually recognized in the Bible as a holy day.
  10. Coca Cola was the first company to capitalize off the holly jolly image of Santa, he was originally depicted much older & creepier.
  11. Leaving cookies and milk for Santa emulates the Dutch practice of feasting on St. Nicholas day.
  12. Mistletoe was thought to be an aphrodisiac.
  13. According to Austrian folklore, Krampus is the demonic opposite of Santa and will drag naughty kids to hell. Way scarier than coal 😉

There you have it, 13 festive facts. Thanks for reading!

Weekend Whirlwind

Blogoween

Let’s start with Friday because that is where the madness began. If you didn’t know Tati released a palette, I was going back and forth on whether or not I wanted the palette. If you haven’t seen the palette, it’s all neutrals in different finishes which I think is a very cool idea because I primarily wear neutrals and love a monochromatic look. They are easy, I’m usually just doing my makeup for work and I don’t often wear color. So, 12 PM rolls around and I was still on the fence. I ate my lunch, listened to some of my book and then took to Twitter to see how the launch was going. I figured that if it sold out immediately, then I didn’t need it. Well, it did sell out but not right away and I ended up ordering one when I got home that night. I’m really interested to see what the formula is like and if I enjoy it well-enough, I think it will be time to throw out my Violet Voss Holy Grail Palette which is several years old. Expiration date, who? I did not need another palette, after getting rid of 3/4 of my makeup collection, I still have about a dozen or so but I’m happy that my purchase contributed to her sell out!

Friday night, I had a Halloween party, it’s the only bash that I attend as my friend has been hosting it since college and it’s basically a lifetime commitment. I’m not feeling super Halloween’y this year, I just tossed on some green eyeshadow and an old witch costume. I usually get put to work anyway so it’s not like anyone cares what I’m wearing. The bash was fun, I don’t drink socially so when people started getting real blitzed, I snuck out. I also had to work early Saturday morning at ULTA, we unpacked so much product for the holiday – it was nuts! I cannot believe all of the sets and holiday kits that are coming out. I don’t know if I will be purchasing anything, you just never know what you’re gonna get with holiday releases. We had to be in full Halloween makeup since the store was open for a couple of hours while we were still working. I had to work that night for my day job’s Halloween event so went home, scrubbed my face and tried to sneak in a nap. The nap did not happen because my neighbors who are being evicted this week after they had a huge domestic incident (really tragic) are deciding to be assholes to all of the neighbors who spoke with the police by blasting music, banging, slamming doors, etc. Friday is their last day, we only have to make it to Friday. It’s wearing on everyone, most of the neighbors are on really good terms and we’re just burnt out on these people’s bullshit. Anyway, so I watched a movie and did some laundry then got in full makeup for the night. I had to sneak out since the asshole neighbors have also taken to accosting people in the hallway. You’d think that I live in a trap house, I don’t.

Saturday night was non-stop, it started with me picking up two 15-gallon bags of popcorn. You wouldn’t think popcorn would weigh very much but you’d be surprised. Also, if you drive a small car like myself, it isn’t going to fit in your trunk. After a moment’s panic thinking that I would have to secure the bags to the roof, I pushed my front seats forward as far as I could and peeled out. The event was fun but long and there were lots of sticky kids. Being Minnesota, it was pretty brisk but at least we didn’t get rained on. Then it was home for the evening, removing my face yet again and trying to sleep before my 7 AM shift at ULTA on Sunday. I have to say that my face was unhappy after three makeup changes in less than 24 hours, it was red and dry from the windy evening too.

Sunday was fun, we got to put out most of the holiday goodies that had been unpacked the day before. ULTA is almost totally decked out for the holidays, it does seem a bit early but the sheer volume of product that comes in kind of forces retailers to start phasing it out. I’m not ready for Christmas carols or snow but it is fun to see all of the sparkly packages and winter-themed displays. I then treated myself to some Taco John’s potato oles, my favorite cheat food and took a 10-hour nap. Today I overslept but still got work on time and think I’m sick which makes a lot of sense after a weekend of junk food and no sleep. I’m over Halloween *gasp* and will probably put out the Christmas stuff this weekend 😝 Did you go to any Halloween events this year? I am looking forward to trick or treaters but I’m tapped out otherwise.

Another Fall Tag P. 1

Blogoween

Ah! I totally blew Blogoween, the nights have just been getting away from me and I blame the fact that it’s now getting dark at 5 o’clock. I’m exaggerating (only a little) but sometimes I get home and I’m so tired that I just skip dinner and sometimes my skincare (gasp) and head right to bed. Anyway, I’m finishing strong and am striving to stay up past 7 but also not making any promises 😛

Shelldon Regular

Fall rain is either cold, windy and miserable or crisp, refreshing and romantic. I hate grocery shopping in fall rain, I don’t know why but I cannot stand it. I hate grocery shopping most any time but when I’m cold and wet, it is so much worse.

Shelldon Regular

When the humidity finally dissipates and the air stops smelling like manure.

Shelldon Regular

I am planning on seeing at least one haunted house or haunted something this weekend. I also want to make a trip to Minnesota’s Largest Candy Store, this time of year they have apples, cider, apple butter – pretty much anything that can be made from apples, they’ve got it. Not to mention all of the glorious candy.

memberimage

Shelldon Regular

Windy! I love a dark, rainy night with leaves whipping through the air.

Shelldon Regular

Rain, I will even take torrential downpours over fog because it just creeps me out. There is a two-lane highway that I take to get to work and it is between two fields, some mornings it is so fogged out that I take an entirely different way to work just to avoid it. The fog is so dense over the road, cars will look like they are disappearing. No thanks.

Shelldon Regular

The food and baking, I love making soups and breads. The scent of the season, where I live in Minnesota the air smells like manure from about April to August so it’s a nice change. And of course, the beautiful colors.

Shelldon Regular

The pumpkin spice mania, the dark mornings and the fact that is is here and gone in just a few weeks.

Shelldon Regular

Probably when I started college, I went to a beautiful campus that was most stunning in fall. There was just always something about walking those old halls and holing up in the library to study, watching the rain against my dorm window.

Shelldon Regular

Leaves! Yes, the B&BW candle but also just running though leaves smells so good until they start rotting but we’ve got a few weeks before that happens 😛

Shelldon Regular

You’ve Got Mail, I think it starts out in the fall and that paired with her cute little bookstore gives it that perfectly cozy ambiance.

Shelldon Regular

The colors, obviously but again, just the smell of leaves is so delightful.

Shelldon Regular

If I had a fire, then probably a fire but I just watch them in bed now. I don’t own a television, I just watch stuff on my phone and it’s easier to be in bed while doing this.

Shelldon Regular

If I had a partner…no scratch that, I enjoy doing things by myself 😀

Shelldon Regular

There aren’t a ton of hiking opportunities where I live and the ones that do exist are typically plagued by too many people. I do a lot of trail running though which feels like hiking and fall/winter is the best time to do it.

Shelldon Regular

I have but also, I don’t like being that close to bees and messing with the fruits of their labor. I prefer to just purchase already bagged apples at the orchard, I do like going to orchards in general though.

Shelldon Regular

Cooking, baking, cleaning, reading, knitting – pretty much anything that one can do inside and avoid getting cold and wet.

Shelldon Regular

Mustard.

Shelldon Regular

Tough call but if I’m being honest, my love affair with winter died after that -29 degree polar vortex bullshit that happened last year. I like winter, I like snow but I don’t like it when it feels dangerous to be outside. We will see how this winter goes but I’m a fall fan as of now.

Shelldon Regular

Autumn, I hate spring. Pastels, allergies, lawn mowing, all the trash hiding under the snow because people can’t put their shit in the fucking garbage, the road kill – hate it all.

Shelldon Regular

Skirts, tights, boots.

Shelldon Regular

I don’t really have a bad memory that I associate specifically with the season and I hope it stays that way.

Shelldon Regular

It would certainly be my wedding season but any season that someone wants to get married in should be wedding season.

Shelldon Regular

Cider, being the total hypocrite that I am, I picked up some pumpkin spice apple cider just this weekend and it is actually delicious.

Shelldon Regular

I have and I hate the smell of pumpkin pulp, I can’t stop smelling it for days. I rarely carve pumpkins anymore.

Shelldon Regular

Again, from You’ve Got Mail where Meg Ryan is walking though the streets of New York and that song by The Cranberries is playing.

That’s it for today but I will be back later with a 31 Nights of Halloween post. Do you love fall, do you get a little burnt out on it? I do, Hobby Lobby has their Christmas stuff out already and I’m not even mad about it.

🖤

Spooky Tag P. II

Blogoween

Welcome back to spooky season on my blog! What are you doing to get into the spirit of the season? Do you have any decorations up, are you working on a costume? Let me know & let’s jump into to the second part of this Halloween themed tag!

Spirit Halloween

Absolutely, I truly believe that there are multiple dimensions that we are existing in concurrently to this one. There’s just too much that humans don’t understand about the space-time continuum to believe otherwise, I think it’s the foolhardiness of the human ego that prevents us from opening our minds to phenomenons outside of our own existence. Welcome to my TED Talk 😛 I think that the doppelganger occurrence is actually tears in the space-time continuum – debate me.

Spirit Halloween

Nothing comes to mind, I don’t think I would be a potion kind of bwitch – I just get this feeling that I would rely more heavily on incantations, curses, etc. Do you ever wonder what kind of witch you’d be? Are you watching that Salem show, I’m having a hard time getting into it – I find anything about the witch trials to be deeply saddening.

Spirit Halloween

Not usually, even though I tend to believe in things that I can’t see, I’m pretty skeptical. Someone could kick my front door in and I’d be like – are you sure?

Spirit Halloween

Yes, and it was very anti-climactic. For some reason, as a kid, I thought that the point of the game was to summon the Bloody Mary as in the Catholic queen who executed a ton of protestants. I just didn’t find it scary because I was Catholic, clearly I would be spared. I don’t think that’s what the point of the game is though…

Spirit Halloween

Eh, not necessarily. I think that pure evil does exist and demons, hell, the devil are just a way of trying to separate that evil from the human existence. Some people are just evil, it’s hard to understand but creating this fantasy won’t change that. I often say that there are many things that I would sell my soul for but I just don’t believe in the devil.

Spirit Halloween

Probably nothing, I can rationalize most anything and would talk myself out of hearing anything. That being said, I also live in a top floor apartment and might get more spooked alone in a house but I’m not sure.

Spirit Halloween

The Birds, I love how chic everyone in that movie is and at the end of the day, they are just birds. I feel that I would have a pretty good chance at surviving. Honestly, probably any Hitchcock movie, everyone just looked so dapper.

Spirit Halloween

Probably a cat, hear me out, it is a surprisingly versatile costume. It works for young and old alike, now I can wear leggings, pleather, a cute leotard and I can just dress up in some sweats and ears when I’m 80. It works on so many levels.

Spirit Halloween

Been there, done that. I find graveyards to be very peaceful unless you’re in the deep south where there are such beautiful graveyards but they feel different. Nothing against the south, many tragic events in US history have taken place there. The graveyards I’ve been to felt restless, they effected me differently. Did I mention that I like to visit graveyards, mostly for the historical value.

Spirit Halloween

Eh, hiding…? I have seen enough zombie movies to know that nothing works. I think I would just hide as far away from civilization as I could. Also, have you ever wondered how effective wild animals would be at taking out zombies? Like, maybe just acquire an army of bears as I don’t think they would be as susceptible to the zombie disease. Or would they be? Then your army of bears just turns on you…?

That wraps it up for par deux, I hope you enjoyed!
