New Year, New…blah, blah, blah…

Life

New Year’s has never been my holiday, growing up with my mother, we were always expecting the world to end. To me, the year already starts off fantastic simply because the world didn’t end. When I started living on my own I planned on sleeping through the stroke of midnight so then I would at least miss the Apocalypse – or whatever the fuck the religious zealots always say is going to happen. Is it the Rapture? Don’t we want that? I always wondered how the end of the world worked with time zones. Is it when the first continent hits midnight? Does Death just pick at random? Wouldn’t it be a laugh if the world actually ends at like 1:42 AM or other seemingly insignificant, unassuming time? Exactly where will he be riding from, are there numerous entities? How can the entire world end all at once? Won’t some countries hear of the arrival of the end of the world and be able to prepare? Always things that I wondered as a child, it was a relief watching the NYE celebration in New York because I could relax knowing they were 3 hours ahead of us and hadn’t been smote so we were probably in the clear. It’s nuts right? Thanks, Christianity. Let’s not even get into the fact that time is a man made construct and only exists because we all adhere to it and say it does. So, like I said, not big into New’s Year πŸ˜€ I don’t make resolutions, if you want to make a change then do it whenever you feel like it! Also, the world could be ending so why wait for New Year’s?! I appreciate the concept of leaving things in the past year and have some things that can stay in 2019.

I’m sure that most people can relate to this one, I will jump on Instagram to see what’s happening and spend hours on the explore page absorbing shit that isn’t enriching my life. I definitely want to be choosier with how I spend my time and stay up to date on current events without the unnecessary bullshit.

I have been working since I was 16, I’m sick of it and I am sick of working all of the time. I was thinking just the other day that I wouldn’t be up at 5 AM if I didn’t need to be at work, my work day starts 3 hours before I’m even there. I wouldn’t use as much gas, I wouldn’t have to waste money on work specific clothes. And no, I am not compensated for these things with my salary – my salary is for what I do when I actually get to work. How is this not talked about more?

Smol Kitty Boi

Not much to say here, I don’t like being around a lot of people.

I have been treating myself all over the place, this is the year that I hope to purchase a house and should be more conservative. We won’t talk about the David’s Tea order that I treated myself to for my birthday πŸ˜€

Do you make resolutions or set goals for the new year? Let me know if you did anything fun for the holiday! Oh, and Happy New Year πŸ™‚

Blogmas Day 23: Merry Christmas Eve, Eve

Blogmas - 2019

I can’t lie, I’m kinda ready to be done with Blogmas πŸ˜‚ It’s fun but hard to come up with content that’s unique. Although, I love reading all of the festive posts and will be a little sad going back to business as usual. Tonight’s post will just be a bit of a catch up ☺️ I’m enjoying some hot cocoa and listening to some Christmas tunes, I feel very festive but wish it was snowing.

Today was my last day of work until January 6 and I couldn’t be more thrilled. It’s been a long year, I’m ready to not be at work for awhile. Two blissful weeks of sleeping, snowboarding, snowshoeing and sleeping.

I almost finished wrapping all of my gifts, I’m loving the new wrapping paper and how sparkly it is. I need one of those bins for storing paper though because my cats like to futz around in the rolls. I plan to hit Target bright and early to score some more string and will look for one then. I’m loving the rustic look of the string against the glitzy prints.

I received an Echo Dot as an early Christmas present and it’s the coolest thing! It’s the perfect size for my bedroom and I’m already thinking about one for the living room. I don’t own a television and my apartment can be too quiet at times, I can play just about anything on the Dot and it’s awesome.

I went to confession, it was as boring and sad as I thought it would be πŸ˜‚ I’m all set for Christmas Mass though which is the only reason I went, that and the damn sign. Confession does have this weird ability to make you feel shiny and new, it’s hard to explain but glad I got it done.

That’s about it in my neck of the woods, a quiet evening before the hustle and bustle of Christmas celebrations commence. I hope you’re having a Merry Christmas Eve, Eve ☺️

Blogmas Day 17: Winter To Do List

Blogmas - 2019

So, I’m cruising into work this morning and there’s a Catholic church right before my turn, they have one of those enormous marquee signs out front. Usually it just has some corny Christian humor on it but today it said, Have you been to confession lately? Which made me feel immediately guilty because I haven’t been in quite awhile. Also though, I’ve been living the life of a saint for well over a year now. Alcohol – who is she? Physical relations – I don’t know her. The closest I’ve been to a man in the last year is at work and let me tell you, it’s slim pickings and they might all be married but I digress. That’s the Catholic in me though, even when you aren’t doing anything sinful, you still have to go tell a priest about it because it’s a sin not to. Needless to say, I’m going to mass tomorrow night.

As mentioned in an earlier post, we’ve had about 20 inches of snow and temperatures well below zero over the last couple of months. It feels like winter but it doesn’t even start until December 21st so I have plenty of time to get some things checked off my list.

Most of these things, I do every year but some of them are new things that I would like to try. I love doing things around the apartment during the winter; tidying, cleaning, organizing and just enjoying my home. I have never been to a full day spa treatment but I think that’s what I am treating myself to for my birthday and my snowboarding trip. Let me know what’s on your to do list this winter, thanks for reading!

Blogmas Day 9: A Customer Service Rant

Blogmas - 2019

So, I was going to post something along these lines prior to Black Friday but thought it was a bit snarky so decided not to. A couple of things happened this weekend though that really irritated me and I have some things to say. Friday night I got off work pretty late, I decided to get some take out instead of going home and making a mess in my kitchen. Plus, I feel guilty cooking after 10 at night since I have neighbors next to me and below me but I’m not sure they’d even notice. Anyway, so I’m getting a sandwich and the line is backed up all the way to the door and I assumed that they were just having a rush. Turns out that the guy at the front of the line had requested that the sandwiches that were being made for him be thrown away and that the barista go to look for more of whatever salad he was getting on his because the stuff they had out lookedΒ dry.Β Aside from the fact that there are people starving all over the world, he was ordering a sandwich from a sandwich shop where the ingredients sit out, all day, in a refrigerated counter – stuff might look a little dry. The guy continued to berate the barista saying that they were going to poison someone and he’d be making a complaint to the manager. It was totally nuts and meanwhile, the line was just stacking up so these poor kids were going to be working double time to get caught up. Did I mention that this is a vegan sandwich shop?! It’s not like they had fresh meat just laying around on the counter, honestly.

The other event that set in motion something that really set me off also happened on Friday night. The cashier next to me was cashing out a lady who asked if there were any coupons out. Now, many retailers have membership programs where you can get exclusive coupons but you have to sign up for the rewards program and this lady wasn’t even signed up. We aren’t supposed to just give coupons out so it puts us in a tough spot when customers assume that we can look coupons up or just have them on hand. This lady would not let it go and finally the associate caved and gave her the exclusive discount that was currently running for rewards members. Well, you can get fired for doing this and she did. Which brings me to the topic of this blog post, how not be an asshole customer especially during the holidays.

Amilya Regular

I cannot stress this enough, it slows us down when every other customer who gets up to the register doesn’t have their coupon ready. Don’t ask what coupons are out, if we tell you then it sets an expectation that we may not be able to meet. Don’t ask for additional discounts or if we have coupons, we don’t. It just astounds me the lengths that shoppers go to for a coupon, come prepared and if you can’t afford something without a coupon then maybe you shouldn’t buy it. I understand shoppers having no regard for retail workers but have some consideration for the people behind you. Lastly, read the fine print – all coupons have exclusions so read them. Keep in mind that we have no control over what’s excluded or how clear the coupon is.

Amilya Regular

Again, it slows us down when we don’t have a receipt and usually we can’t give the full amount back without one which sucks for us and for you. Sure, you can talk to the manager but she’s going to say the same thing.

Amilya Regular

We are going just as fast as we can and usually it’s the stupid questions and unprepared shoppers that are slowing us down. Feel free to call them out for holding up the line though. It astounds me how many times I’ve apologized for the long line but rarely has someone in the line ever turned around and apologized for holding it up.Β

Amilya Regular

There seems to be this assumption that the role of a retail worker is to just take people’s shit. And to the people who think this, do you go to work to get shit on everyday? Our role is to provide the best customer experience possible, within our ability to do so – that’s it. Could some associates be a little more helpful? Sure, I’ve been on the receiving end of some really shitty customer service but on the whole, they do their best.

I’m so thankful that retail is not my full-time gig and that I do it for extra spending money and fun. Also though, when I worked retail full-time years ago, I don’t recall people being so consistently rude. I’m not sure what’s happened to society but just stay home and shop online if you can’t be nice. That’s my rant, I love shopping during the holidays and just want everyone to have a fun time. Is that so much to ask!? What’s been your shopping experience so far this year? Are customers becoming ruder or am I just getting old?

March Happenings

Random

Everyone is seemingly of the opinion that January is a long schlep of an uneventful month but March is that month for me. It’s still kinda winter, nobody knows what to wear, produce is terrible. I’m glad to see the end of it, I’ve been gone for a bit so let’s have a catch-up!

My new car is still the main event of this past month. I definitely like it and am happy to report that I sold the Mazda to someone who seemed excited to fix it. I think it will ride again 😭

I think that I found the most amazing burger replacement ever. I picked up these Beyond Meat patties randomly even though I’m not big into meat replacements and I’m so glad I did! They have a grilled flavor to them and the texture is perfect, not at all like a mashed bean patty. I definitely recommend!

I didn’t read a single book in March and I blame Desperate Housewives and BuzzFeed Unsolved for my lack of reading time. I do plan to read more in April but if the weather gets really good, I might whiff again 😝

Lent has been trying and we’re not even half-way through, I’m not having trouble sticking to my penitence but I’m getting burnt out on going to mass. I think I’m the only person under 60 at my church, where are all of the hot Irish Catholic guys?! It doesn’t bother me when I’m only going once a week but when it’s three times a week, I want some eye candy! I don’t think that’s too much to ask.

Not much else to report, our busy season is ramping up at work but I have some fun excursions scheduled in the coming months. How was your month, what did you get up to?

Dust to Dust

Random

And so it begins, 40 days of repentance, giving up all my favorite things and basking in all-around misery. But I’m Catholic and if I’m not suffering then I’m probably doing it wrong 😭 In all honesty, Lent isn’t so bad – I hated it as a kid but I have found some clarity and peace in making small sacrifices as I have aged. Lent is a period of reflection and rebirth that I’ve come to enjoy. It’s also free of my mother’s salmon patties which is probably a huge reason that I dreaded it in my youth. My mom was a lot of things, a good cook not being one of those things πŸ˜‚ Anyway, in addition to the usual fasting I chose sugar and social media as my sacrifices this year. Social media was a bit of a softball since I don’t love it anyway but I have a pretty serious relationship with jellybeans and I’m already jonesing for a bag. Oh, and porn, decided to cut back on that too. Not really but I always wonder how honest people are about what they are abstaining from for Lent. Like you never hear anyone mention giving up porn or smoking crack – are sugar and social media really my only vices or are they just the ones that I feel comfortable sharing?! Who can say.

People in my life are generally pretty surprised when they find out I’m a fairly devout Catholic and honestly, same. In the year or two after my mission trip and deciding not to be a nun, I didn’t participate in the church at all, it disgusted me. I still find Catholicism pretty problematic, the entire organization needs a rebrand and I’m not talking about tambourines in the choir because that’s blasphemy. All the geezers who have been responsible for covering up scandals have got to go – from the Pope down. I think that people my age are extremely disappointed and distrustful of our church leaders and these issues need to be dealt with before we can find peace in our faith. Could I convert to something else? Probably but like I said, tambourines.

This post was really just to announce my abstinence from social media (aside from blogging) and a plea for jelly beans πŸ˜‚ Do you celebrate Lent? Can it be referred to as a celebration? What are you abstaining from?
